3 Tips for Promoting Original Music at a Cover Gig

Posted by Josh David on Sep 28, 2014 4:44:56 PM

Most of us that play in cover bands have also played, or currently play, in an original band as well. For a lot of us, the bands may be one in the same. My band, Fighting Friday, actually started as an original project. We decided to cross over into cover gigs to supplement our incomes, gain increased exposure, and to push our original music out to the audiences for which were are performing. Now we have a healthy following and on a nightly basis get requests for specific original songs (not including our wives/girlfriend). That’s pretty cool! Here are a few quick tips on how you can start promoting original music at a cover.

7 Tips For Creating Awesome Covers and Mashups

Covers and Mashups

Cover band mashups are quickly gaining in popularity as are original covers (putting your own unique spin on a cover). My band Fighting Friday has become well known in our small circle and by our fans for our mashups. We’ve tried and A/B tested mashups for years and have figured out what works best for us. There are numerous ways to craft and execute mashups to be highly successful and well received. There are also ways to do it to ensure that it flops and you hear crickets at the end while half your audience is walking out the door (ok it may not be instant, but if you lose people’s attention they will wander off.)

I want to touch on a few key points to consider when you are approaching a mashup or an original cover. Cover bands, take note!

Where To Go To See Live Music In Boston

Posted by Josh David on Sep 23, 2014 5:19:00 PM

Being in a band, a lot of people ask me where to go to see live music in Boston. To me, Boston is pretty underestimated as far as the music scene goes. We get an enormous amount of nationally touring headlining acts, talented local original bands, and scores of awesome local cover bands. I think people forget how many big name acts either started or were cultivated in Beantown but a few that come to mind include Aerosmith, Pixies, Godsmack, Might Mighty Bosstones, Guster, Powerman 5000,  Extreme, and our namesake, Boston. For a full list, head over to and check out their list of bands from Boston by rank. With small to medium venues like The Sinclair breathing some new life into the scene, the future looks a little brighter. But how about cover venues? Well, if you're looking for venues with cover bands in Boston, you're in the right city. From Boston, to Somerville, to Cambridge, you can take your pick. In this post, I'll give you a quick run down of some of my favorite venues, as they are today.

Live Music Boston

Being a weekend warrior playing in boston cover bands is a tiring, exhilerating, frustrating, rewarding, thankless, gracious, and potentially lucrative way to spend your Friday and Saturday nights. I often hear fans of live music complain about the state of the band scene in Boston, both in the original AND cover scene. This post focuses particularly on the cover band side of it, but most of what will be touched upon is applicable to live original music as well.
